It has come to Pope Vicky’s attention that some priests would prefer the pontiff’s attire to be less clerical, pompous, or ritzy. They imagined that the first woman Pope would throw off the traditional vestments worn by male clergy in positions of authority.
Pope Vicky has been tempted to update not only the clothing styles but also the liturgical dictates. For in addition to verging on pompous, papal attire can be downright frumpy–with all those layers!
And yet, if Pope Vicky were to pack up the finery, would she not be depriving the people of one of the few remaining spectacles of ostentation that they enjoy? Is not the Pope the only official figure left on earth who–in the course of carrying out her regular duties–gets to wear magnificent costumes of incomparable distinction?

The queen of England (and various royal progeny) also get to wear and revel in the costumes (as well as BIG Honkin’ Jewels!!!) which are similarly invested with meaning.
People want authority figures to look the part. Look at police. Military personnel of high rank get to wear some Snazzy dress uniforms.
I’m good with pomp. Even papal pomp.
